5800X to 5800X3D quick test in niche games (X4, Rimworld, Transport Fever 2, 7 Days to Die, Chivalry 2, ...)
for fun I upgraded from my 5800X (undervolted and slightly overclocked) to a 5800X3D (With a RTX 3080 TUF, 2x16 GB 3200 CL-16 RAM, x570 Aorus Elite). 1440p240hz display with the games being capped at 220 fps usually. Windows 11 with current chipset drivers and the newest BIOS. My 5800X is going to my younger sister.
I couldn't find a lot of info for the 5800X3D about games I actually want to play, so I made a quick and dirty comparison with games where I had performance issues before.
Just with the Nvidia overlay, average fps and 99% fps in tough situations I picked, maybe it helps someone :)
|Game||5800X Avg/99% fps||5800X3D Avg/99% fps||Comment|
|Rimworld (Medium sized colony mid-game, fully zoomed out, 3x speed, unfortunately didn't measure TPS, but I was annoyed by stutter during camera movement and zooming)||107/68||123/85||Feels a tiny bit smoother, but not that much difference|
|7 Days to Die (Newly generated world, standing around at the start and looking at the car while circling the mouse)||182/130||198/155||Game still feels awful with the camera movement, despite motion blur off. Smoother, but the game is always iffy|
|X4:Foundations (Just one of my random game saves, looking at a medium sized station)||65/40||92/89||Holy shit! I'm suddenly GPU bound here at 99% usage, this is insane|
|Transport Fever 2 (Small sandbox map, selecting to build a bus depot and quickly moving it over a small town in circles, the game is brutally unoptimized)||43/26||50/30||I already refunded this game once, the camera is super stuttery and I noticed during build mode fps really crash. The 5800X3D feels smoother, but the game still sucks performance wise, especially when zooming and moving the camera :-/|
|Chivalry 2 (The new snow map, 24v24, looking up at the castle as Mason with players running around, DLSS Quality. Tough to get consistent fps readings here due to multiplayer)||130/92||139/112||This one is really interesting, I actually got 99% GPU usage most of the time now (but that leads to slight hitches, not sure if the server was bad). When I put DLSS from Quality to Balanced I get 190/150 at times, so there's definitely potential.|
|Apex Legends (DX12, Low settings, ingame fps counter: On the drop ship looking down over the new ranked map)||130 to 140 avg||130 to 140 avg||This one wasn't that important, during gameplay it's mostly capped at my 220 fps limit anyway. But during the drop ship part when looking over the entire map fps went as far down as 130 with the 5800X, unfortunately absolutely no change with the 5800X3D here|
All in all decent improvements, but it doesn't really make shitty games playable. The only one that really surprised me was X4, the difference here was massive (and it got even more potential due to suddenly being GPU bound, I could simply lower a few settings!).
Chivalry 2 also shows potential, I might lower some settings so the GPU isn't capped (But in some parts of the map the GPU usage still drops to ~80% or so).
The 5800X3D is a hot boy, I have a Noctua NH-D15 (with two fans) and during a Cinebench R23 multicore run it hits 90°C. The score is also quite a bit lower than with my tuned 5800X (14317 vs 15616).
